Cedar City is the perfect basecamp for exploring some of the most-visited national parks and monuments. This guide answers the most common questions visitors have before heading out on their adventure.

What national parks are close to Cedar City?


Cedar City is centrally located near two national parks and one national monument. This makes it easy for our visitors to experience the stunning views all within a short drive. 

  • Zion National Park - about 62 miles south of Cedar City via I-15 onto Hwy 9.
  • Kolob Canyons (Zion National Park) - about 20 miles south of Cedar City via I-15 to Exit 40.
  • Bryce Canyon National Park - about 79 miles east of Cedar City via Hwy 14 onto Hwy 89/12
  • Cedar Breaks National Monument - about 21 miles east of Cedar City via Hwy 14 onto Hwy 148

Zion National Park

Do I need a national park pass?


Yes, visitors will need to purchase a parks pass before entering any national parks. Keep in mind that if you are an international visitor, you will need to purchase the new Non-Resident Annual Pass. These passes can be purchased online or at any national park.

Can I visit multiple parks in one trip?

While it's certainly possible to visit more than one park in a single day, we recommend taking at least a day or two per park. By giving yourself enough time to explore, you'll have the opportunity to discover local favorites and capture unforgettable memories without feeling rushed.

Are there scenic alternative routes?

Absolutely! There are several scenic highways worth considering if you have the time. Popular alternative routes include Highway 14 through Cedar Canyon, Scenic Byway 12 toward Bryce Canyon, and the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway.

 

Note: As of June 7, 2026, Zion National Park implemented large vehicle limitations through the Zion-Mt Carmel Highway. If your vehicle is over those limitations, you will be rerouted. Prior to visiting Zion, please measure your vehicle and make sure you are within those restrictions.
