In Cedar City and Brian Head, the mountain bike terrain shifts quickly and often. In a single day, you can move from red rock desert to alpine forest, from smooth singletrack to quiet gravel roads that stretch for miles. That range is what sets the area apart. It's accessible, uncrowded, and built for riders of all kinds.

Town to Trail: Mountain Biking in Cedar City

The mountain biking here is defined by variety. Each trail system offers something a little different in terms of views, difficulty, and technical features. Together, they create a well-rounded adventure. In under an hour's drive, you can find four trail systems and a smattering of backcountry trails along the way.

The Iron Hills Trail System is one of the most accessible places to start. With more than 30 miles of trails, it offers options for nearly every skill level. Riders will find smooth flow trails, rolling terrain, and sections of volcanic rock that add texture without overwhelming new riders.

Thunderbird Gardens brings a more technical edge, with stunning views. The terrain is defined by red rock features, tighter lines, and more deliberate riding. The trails here reward focus and control, making it a favorite for riders who enjoy a challenge and a strong sense of place.

Three Peaks Recreation Area is classic southern Utah riding with wide views, rolling hills, varied terrain, and room to explore. Three Peaks is a great place to build skills, test endurance, or enjoy a longer ride without feeling crowded.

Head in the Clouds: Mountain Biking in Brian Head

Cedar City offers range, and Brian Head brings the elevation!

At 10,000 feet, Brian Head Resort offers a cooler, forested environment that feels completely different from the high desert below. Not to mention, the speed and challenge that only the "Downhill of the Gods" can provide! During the summer, the resort operates as a lift-served bike park, giving riders access to long descents, bermed trails, and purpose-built flow. The speed along the trail, the views from the lift, and the food at the lodge are all part of the Brian Head experience that make these trails a must.

Backcountry trails like Bunker Creek and Dark Hollow guide riders through aspen groves and open meadows with a steady sense of momentum. For those who prefer a slower pace, these routes can offer a quieter way to take in the landscape.

The elevation changes more than the view. It changes how the ride feels, from the air to the effort to the overall experience.

The Road Less Traveled: Gravel and Scenic Routes

Not every ride is about speed or technical features. Some are about distance, quiet, and the rhythm of the road.

Gravel routes around the area can offer a blend of scenery, history, recreation, and exploration. The Gap Loop from Parowan takes riders through the natural passageway of the Parowan Gap, hewn from dark sandstone and adorned with hundreds of petroglyphs. While routes like the Kolob Reservoir route surround you in high elevation temperatures, stands of bright aspens, and vibrant mountain wildflowers along the way.

Connecting from Brian Head town to Cedar Breaks is a short drive, but an even better ride. While there is quite a climb between the town and the National Monument, the experience of cycling through the colorful landscape is one-of-a-kind.

The pace is different, and that is part of the appeal. It gives you time to take in the landscape and settle into the ride.

Plan Your Ride

The riding season here shifts naturally with elevation.

Spring and fall are ideal for Cedar City's lower trails, with comfortable temperatures and dry conditions. In summer, Brian Head becomes the focus, offering cooler weather and high-alpine riding. The seasonal balance makes it easy to build a multi-day trip. And makes a return visit worth it. The trail variety around us is a great reminder that what matters most is being on a bike. New riders can build confidence here. More experienced riders can push into technical terrain or longer routes.

The landscapes shift. The riding evolves. And each trip offers a little more than the last.
