Hiking Trails in Cedar City & Kanarraville

With something new to discover at every turn, it’s no surprise that there are some great hiking trails tucked away in and around Cedar City!


Coal Creek Trail

EASY | 2.7 MILES | YEAR-ROUND | OUT & BACK | 180 FOOT ELEVATION GAIN

This paved trail in Cedar City follows Coal Creek up Cedar Canyon. Red rock views abound along this all-access trail! This trail is part of the Cedar City trail system that rings the city.

Trailhead: The trailhead is located at Canyon Park (500 East Center Street)

Turnkpike Trail

MODERATE | 4.4 MILES | SUMMER – FALL | OUT & BACK | UP & DOWN

A hillside trail on the south end of Cedar City. The trail has both minor climbs and descents passing through the foothills. Portions of the trail are exposed to the sun later in the morning and throughout the day.

Trailhead: The Southview Trailhead is located at the end of Shurtz Canyon Drive off Old Hwy 91.

Lichen It Trail

EASY | 1.5 MILES | SUMMER – FALL | OUT & BACK | 500 FOOT ELEVATION GAIN

Easy trail that meanders its way up the hill. Turn around once you have reached the Upper Lava Flow Trail. Please be aware that this is a popular trail among mountain bikers; use caution around corners. The trail is uphill only for bikers, both up and down for hikers. Restrooms are located at the trailhead.

Trailhead: The Southview Trailhead is located at the end of Shurtz Canyon Drive off Old Hwy 91.

Thor’s Hideout Trail

MODERATE | 3.6 MILES | SPRING – FALL | OUT & BACK | 564 FOOT ELEVATION GAIN

Some steep climbs and switchbacks through fabulous red-rock country to a stunning view of Cedar City and unique rock outcroppings. This trail is dog friendly and also popular with mountain bikers.

Trailhead: Thunderbird Gardens on 900 North (behind Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Cedar City)

Red Hollow Trail

MODERATE | 3.3 MILES | SPRING – FALL | OUT & BACK | 853 FOOT ELEVATION GAIN

This trail winds through the red rock canyon into Thunderbird Gardens with views of Cedar Canyon and unique rock formations along the way. This trail is popular with hiking and mountain biking. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

This trail connects to the Thor’s Hideout Trail (as shown on the map included below).

Trailhead: The trailhead can be found in Cedar Canyon (SR 14) 1.5 miles up the canyon, to the left.

Kanarraville Falls Trail | Kanarraville, UT

MODERATE to STRENUOUS | 5 MILES | SUMMER – FALL | OUT & BACK | 700 FOOT ELEVATION GAIN

A moderate to strenuous water hike that requires you to hike along and through the stream all the way up the canyon. Due to climbing a 15-foot ladder, several large boulders, uneven terrain, hiking poles, and good grippy water shoes are recommended. Dogs are NOT allowed.

Permits ARE required for this trail and can be purchased here.

Trailhead: The trailhead can be found in Kanarraville, UT. From Old Hwy 91 turn east at 100 North and travel to the parking lot.

Spring Creek Trail | Kanarraville, UT

MODERATE | 5.3 MILES | SUMMER – FALL | OUT & BACK | 948 FOOT ELEVATION GAIN

A beginner slot canyon, follow the old jeep trail through meadows into a narrow canyon. Turn around as the trail becomes difficult to pass without equipment. Located at the south end of Kanarraville.

Trailhead: South on Old Hwy 91 through Kanarraville, turn southeast after Spring Creek Dr and follow the road to the trailhead.

Entrance Fee: Only ONE of the trails listed above requires an entrance fee (Kanarra Falls). All others are on public lands and are FREE to hike.

Nearby Attractions to Add to Your Visit: Many of the trails listed are all located close to Historic Downtown Cedar City and other attractions. For the Thor’s Hideout Trail, extend your stay by playing the 18-hole disc golf course at the trailhead!

Getting There: The above trails are T13 – T14 and T17 – T20.
